Triumph have always been associated with speed events and the factory actively encouraged the use of their machines for trials, racing and record attempts.

The diminutive single cylinder 150cc T15 Terrier and its successor, the 200cc T20 Tiger Cub, could be easily tuned to give more performance. The T15 was good for 8bhp in standard form and a T20, 10bhp rising to 14.5bhp, for the high compression Sports Cub.

Alf Hagon, of motorcycle speedway fame, tuned a T120 to give 27bhp, clearly illustrating the potential of the little engine. The Terrier with its plunger frame, poorly located steering head and spindly forks, is perhaps not an obvious choice for a racer, however.
