Heritage Skills Workshops
As an educational charity, Grampian Transport Museum is committed to celebrating, preserving and passing on those time-honoured skills and techniques that can keep wheels turning for future generations.
'Active Heritage' is The Way Forward
Our transport and industrial heritage is at risk.
Skill loss, digitisation and a lack of practitioners mean that many of the transport heritage skills and techniques that have shaped day-to-day life and work are beginning to quietly slip away from us.
At Grampian Transport Museum, we are determined to play our part in keeping these crucial skills alive, and to make sure our heritage continues to be a living, breathing thing — not just something to be read about in books and websites.
We believe that this 'active heritage' approach can secure the long-term future of these skills and ensure people can still access and learn them, and we want to deliver this in ways that are education, satisfying and fun, for learners of all ages.
Heritage Skills
Skills Areas
Grampian Transport Museum has identified an urgent need to support provision of heritage skills training. We have found that learning opportunities for these skills are becoming harder to access, while at the same time there is significant, rising demand for them.
We are an educational charity, first and foremost, so offering the opportunities to learn and retain these skills for the future is at the heart of what we do.
In Scotland, there are no opportunities to learn skills such as welding, metalwork and fabrication outside of structured NC/HNC courses, and those that operate in England do so at a high cost due to the scarcity of opportunities to learn them.
The GTM Heritage Skills initiative will work with other organisations to deliver workshops and skills sessions around skills at risk, and this may include:
- Signwriting
- Classic Car Maintenance
- Classic Car Electrics
- Welding
- 'Part-Specific' Maintenance Work
