Sustainability
Sustainability is central to how we care for our collections, our community and our environment.
Maximising Efficiency, Minimising Waste
At Grampian Transport Museum, we have made a commitment to responsible practices that ensure the long-term preservation of and access to transport heritage while continually looking to actively reduce our environmental impact and support the region we live in.
As a leading visitor attraction in the North East of Scotland for 40+ years, we recognise our responsibility to operate in an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable manner. As an independent museum preserving transport heritage, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact while continuing to safeguard our collections for future generations.
We actively work to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste across our buildings, including:
- Careful management of heating, lighting and essential climate control systems to balance conservation standards with responsible energy use.
- Encouraging sustainable travel to the museum
- Promoting recycling across the site
- Minimising waste at events and when producing exhibitions
- Prioritising durable materials, re-using where possible
- Sourcing locally, where possible
Through continuous review and improvement, Grampian Transport Museum is committed to preserving not only transport history, but also the environment in which future generations will experience it.
FAQs
GTM has installed 2 solar panel arrays, with battery storage on-site that has heavily reduced our reliance on the National Grid for electricity. We have also installed air source heat pumps throughout the museum, removing the need to use oil heating in the museum building.
Additionally, we have insulated the building and installed insulated sectional roller doors to reduce heat loss, all year round.
For GTM, sustainability also means supporting our local community and economy. We collaborate with local suppliers, volunteers and partner organisations, ensuring that the museum continues to provide educational value, cultural enrichment and economic benefit to the region.
We are exploring collection of rainwater for grey water requirements and watering our plants, we are planting wildflowers and other green areas on-site, and ways to make it easier to recycle when you visit us with recycling bins.
