A division of Jeanneau Newco, the largest luxury yacht builder in Europe, began to sell fibre glass bodied small cars in 1971. The Microcar Virgo, introduced in 1998, set new standards for licence exempt small cars.
The Virgo has a 505cc Lombardini petrol engine and weighs less than 400kg. It offers four seats, 70mph and 65mpg. It is classed as a ‘heavy quadricycle’. This means that it can be driven by motorcycle licence holders. Before licence regulation changes in 1997 only cars with three wheels could be driven on a motorcycle licence.
The MC1 and MC2 replaced the Virgo and they were launched in the UK in April 2004 and November 2006 respectively. Both were available as a 2 seat, or 4 seat long wheelbase version, the long wheelbase being 40mm longer than the short Virgo models. In 2008, a limited edition 'Highland' was introduced with roof rails and distinctive front and rear bumpers.
In 2009, the MC2 was replaced by the M.GO. Today Micro offer their M.GO in the B1 licence category for sale in the UK and also an M.GO electric EV variant.
