Lord Brougham, a celebrated Whig statesman, had a four wheeled carriage built to his own design in 1839 that took his name. It was to become one of the most popular and long lasting types of horse drawn carriage. Broughams survived in production into the early years of the motorcar.

This example was built by Scotland's biggest and best known coachbuilder, Croall & Croall of Edinburgh. During the coaching era John Croall (1791 - 1870) built, owned and operated more mail and stage coaches than all of the rest of the Scottish coaching proprietors put together. His through coaches, "Courier, Chevy Chase and Peeril of the Peak were guaranteed to take just 48 hours from London to Edinburgh in the 1820's.

The Tsar of Russia ordered twenty Croall coaches and John Croall himself drove the first ever stage coach from Moscow to St Petersburgh. Croall coaches were the last to survive into the 1860's as railways rendered the stage coach obsolete.

The company continued to build coaches like this superb Brougham and were quick to change to coachbuilding bodies for the new motorcar in the final years of the nineteenth century. The Albion A6 adjacent is bodied by Croall and Croall. Thereafter, Croall and Croall became a principal motor dealer in Edinburgh, surviving into the 1960's.
