The Austin K9 was adapted from the Austin Loadstar for use by the military — commonly used as a cargo vehicle, ambulance or wireless vehicle.

This Austin K9 entered military service in 1953 and was used as a wireless van, being one of 718 delivered to the Ministry of Defence under War Contract No. 6 VEH 13992.

After it exited military service, it was then used as a recovery breakdown vehicle in Alford at the local garage, Haughton Garage. The garage was located a few metres beyond the end of the Grampian Transport Museum site until it closed.

The K9 was then acquired by Joseph Reid, who carefully restored it to the original military trim and with his wife Gladys Reid participated in the VE Day military parade in Aberdeen and at Peterhead Scottish Week.
