Heritage Skills: Classic car Electrics

The course will be an introduction to electrical components and their maintenance for heritage vehicles. It is aimed at those interested in historic transport with only a basic knowledge of the skills and techniques involved.  It will cover:

  1. Basic principles
  2. Charging
    1. Batteries and chargers
    2. Dynamos and Alternators
    3. Voltage regulators and cutouts
  3. Ignition
    1. Magnetos
    2. Coils
    3. Distributors
    4. Ignition timing
  4. Starter motors
  5. Wiring, harnesses, fuses and relays
  6. Lighting
  7. Instruments
  8. Auxiliaries, horns, fuel pumps etc.
  9. Questions and answers

 

It is not intended to cover trembler coils seen in Veteran Car ignition systems unless there is a specific interest. Equally it will not cover modern solid state ignition.

 

The course will be primarily a presentation with practical demonstrations covering areas such as battery management and ignition timing.

It will be followed by a guided tour of historic vehicles in the Collection Centre with the opportunity to see under the bonnets (not an opportunity for general visitors!)
