ROBERT DAVIDSON
THE ABERDONIAN PIONEER OF ELECTRIC LOCOMOTION

The life of Robert Davidson (1804 –1894) spanned a period of unprecedented change, seeing the impact of the steam engine, the invention of the telephone and the introduction of electric light. Davidson played his own part in the development of the new sciences. His experimental locomotive predated by decades Siemens’ electric tramway at the 1879 Berlin Exhibition and he was, in the words of one contemporary article, “Certainly the nestor of the art of electric traction”.

Dr Antony Anderson’s biography illuminates the life and work of this enigmatic inventor, the Aberdonian pioneer of electric locomotion.
